Industrial biotechnology uses living organisms or their components for the production of industrial products such as food, chemicals, biofuels, materials and drugs. It includes techniques from molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, biocatalysis and fermentative processes to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of production processes. Examples of applications include enzyme production, food fermentation, renewable chemical production and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
