Sustainable, intelligent and integrated transportation

For the transport sector, CIDAUT focuses its activities on providing answers to the needs of sustainable mobility and efficient manufacturing that the sector (automotive, aeronautics and rail) and society demand. They work on the development of emerging technologies and essential enabling technologies for the development of vehicles and infrastructures, and ultimately, the development of smart cities, with special interest in improving the mobility of citizens in a holistic and sustainable way.

Advanced materials and new processes. Circular economy

Another strategic line of the Center is related to the R&D of new materials and new processes; always within the concept of circular economy and efficient use of resources. Thanks to the multidisciplinary nature of its researchers and scientific-technological equipment, they are able to apply innovation to all stages associated with the development of a new product or process (or improvement of an existing one), ranging from conception, definition of specifications, selection, design and characterization of materials, to process and behavioral simulations, obtaining prototypes, optimization, validation tests, industrialization and automation of manufacturing processes.

Among the transformation processes, the Center has the capacity to develop and fine-tune technologies for molding plastic, metallic and composite materials, deformation of metallic materials, heat and surface treatments of metals, and welding processes. They develop new materials based on polymeric nanomixes, biomaterials, composite materials, both with metallic matrix and ceramic reinforcement, and based on carbon fiber, composite materials with metallic matrix (magnesium and aluminum), light alloys in semi-solid state; and innovative processing technologies such as: RIM, RTM, HP-RTM and RFI processes, EPGS, additive manufacturing, among others.

CIDAUT is also involved in the research and development of less polluting industrial processes and products, reducing the volume of emissions into the environment, and efficient from the point of view of raw material and energy consumption; without forgetting the valorization of by-products for their use as raw material for application in new markets.

Factories of the future. Industry 4.0

Along these lines, CIDAUT is working to take advantage of advances in high-performance computing, data analysis and automation in order to transform standard manufacturing processes into smarter, safer and more environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. It is done on the basis that decision making based on greater quantities and higher quality of real-time information and knowledge management will be the backbone of Industry 4.0 and the Factories of the Future. To this end, they apply their knowledge and experience in aspects such as advanced manufacturing, the definition and implementation of behavioral models, augmented reality, to name a few; all focused on higher productivity, quality improvement and environmental sustainability.

Energy and environment

Within this area they carry out efficient management in the use of Renewable Energies, such as solar energy, the development of new solar receivers, biomass, working on the aspects of gasification and obtaining biogas from biomass, gas and hydrogen, researching and developing technologies for the production of clean hydrogen and its subsequent application in transport and building, as well as the development of fuel cells and their integration. Another of the lines of the Energy and Environment area is Energy Efficiency, where they promote in this field the energy and environmental quality of the construction sector, contributing to the achievement of the objectives set by the European Union.
