Decision support system for the energy market

The ITCL technology center, together with Aduriz Energía, created the “Big Energy Data”, capable of managing, analyzing and predicting future consumption data for decision making in the purchase of energy in real time.

The Technology Center of Burgos, ITCLtogether with Aduriz Energía, a company in the energy sector, have created a technological solution capable of analyzing the necessary data from the energy market and forecasting energy demand, providing a support system for decision making and, in this way, adapting to new market niches, increasing its competitiveness.

Project background

The project arises from the need to Aduriz as an energy marketing SME, located in Merindades (Burgos), to position itself in the field of intelligent energy supply to the rural population.

The changing regulations, the energy shortage and the generation of an energy market where there is daily competition for the price of energy with large companies, led Aduriz Energía to consider having effective tools for analyzing energy demand in order to optimize decision-making, avoiding cost overruns due to excess or shortages in its energy purchasing operations.

Another factor was the growth of new clients for Aduriz, which meant working with the largest number of data sources on a daily basis, making it difficult to analyze and evaluate on an ongoing basis.

The challenge was to develop a technological solution, focused on achieving an intelligent resource planning tool, capable of satisfying a guaranteed energy purchase, avoiding arbitrary decisions that do not fit the potential demand of customers.

The objective was to fence off uncertainty so that the cost of energy associated with a domestic consumption installation would correspond directly to the retailer’s billing.

The focus of the solution was to prioritize smart metering in homes, in order to generate personalized pricing and real-time control of consumption for each user; and a billing system for the retailer, adapted to new energy demand scenarios with significant uncertainty.

As part of the actions carried out in the implementation of the solution, a series of activities were executed for the completion of the project:

  • Development of energy prediction models based on modeling techniques.
  • Development of the BigData system and capture / processing of data obtained in real time.
  • Development of the data visualization system and system interaction interfaces.
  • Provide the prototype with energy prediction rules.
  • Development and testing of the self-management and decision making tool
  • System testing and validation

As a result , it has been possible to successfully implement a management system under the “Big Data energy” concept, capable of managing and analyzing all the data to be controlled in real time, and which also allows:

  • To manage the commercialization and self-consumption business much more efficiently, under the decision support system.
  • Efficiently predict consumption by day and hour, to reduce operating costs, through a system that learns from itself and becomes more and more perfect.
  • Improve the company image, personalization and quality of services, integrating through the tools developed the profile of each client in the structure and operation of the business.

ITCL’s project is a valuable success story, as the development has been based on the design and programming of a series of tools based on Industry 4.0 technologies that generate an integral control of the energy commercialization process, and that integrates the factors of purchase optimization, demand forecasting and the active behavior of the end user.

ITCL performed the model design and algorithm development. The integration with the Big Data platform, as well as the testing and validation of the prototype.
