Cesefor and the DigiMedFor project transform Mediterranean forestry, combining cutting-edge technology and environmental commitment to create a more sustainable future.
We highlight the work of Cesefor, as the Technological Center of Castilla y León, exploring the DigiMedFor project, a pioneering initiative that merges advanced technology and sustainable management of Mediterranean forests.
This publication is one of the first in the new series “Technology for a better world: social and environmental commitment”, where we highlight the exceptional work of technology centers in their social and environmental role, presenting inspiring examples of how technology developed in these centers addresses social and environmental problems.
The challenges of Mediterranean forests
With more than 75 million hectares of forests and woodlands, the Mediterranean region is at a crossroads due to climatic and socioeconomic changes. These changes pose serious threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services, generating economic, social and environmental impacts.
In response to these challenges, DigiMedFor was born, a pioneering project that aims to transform the technological landscape of forestry and the timber supply chain, mitigating adverse effects and strengthening the competitiveness and sustainability of these ecosystems.
Sustainability and competitiveness as project objectives
Launched in June 2022 and with a planned duration of 36 months, DigiMedFor, funded by HORIZON CL6-2022-CIRCBIO-02-06, focuses on empowering key stakeholders for efficient and sustainable forest management. This project seeks to overcome current challenges, improve timber traceability and ensure the long-term vitality of forests, aligning with the European Union’s forestry and digital strategies.
Cutting-edge technology at the service of nature
DigiMedFor distinguishes itself by integrating cutting-edge technologies such as geospatial analysis, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital twin modeling with ICT. This includes a suite of tools for measuring forest variables and attributes, image-based classification and traceability systems, and knowledge platforms with AI-based predictive models. These tools are designed to optimize the sustainability of timber production and improve the provision of ecosystem services.
Environmental and social importance
DigiMedFor is more than a technological project; it is a symbol of commitment to the environment and society. It contributes to the conservation of Mediterranean forests, a crucial resource for biodiversity and human well-being. Its innovative approach to forest management not only preserves these ecosystems, but also promotes a more efficient and responsible forest industry that can adapt to future challenges.
Consortium and collaboration as a multidisciplinary approach
This project is acollaboration between 21 partners from 11 countries, among which the Technological Center of Castilla y León Cesefor actively collaborates .
The sectors involved in the project range from the forest industry to forest owners, academic institutes and research centers, and SMEs.
This diverse consortium brings a wide range of expertise and experience, covering the entire forestry value chain, from research to practical operation.
Field application of Mediterranean model forests.
The Mediterranean Model Forest Network provides a real scenario for testing and applying the digital and technological solutions developed. These forests serve as living laboratories where the impacts and benefits of the implemented tools and strategies can be observed.
A green and connected future
DigiMedFor stands as an inspiring example of how technology can be a positive force for environmental and social change. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, the project is paving the way towards more resilient and sustainable forest management in the Mediterranean region.
DigiMedFor not only preserves nature, but also opens up new possibilities for intelligent and responsible forest management, demonstrating that technological innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
