the GO BIOPOPTECH project coordinated by Cesefor promotes the cultivation and use of poplar, marking a milestone in the production of wood with high added value and environmental commitment.

The GO BIOPOPTECH project, in which Cesefor participates, focuses on maximizing the competitiveness of poplar cultivation through the evaluation of new clones, the generation of innovative tools for the evaluation of production and the optimization of the quality of its wood for the creation of cutting-edge technological products.

Deploying innovation in poplar cultivation

The BIOPOPTECH operational group, focused on poplar cultivation and the cascading use of its wood, proposes a novel initiative for the wood industry, making this tree the protagonist in the development of sustainable technological products with high added value.

The heart of GO BIOPOPTECH beats to the rhythm of four fundamental objectives. From understanding clonal influences to integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) for optimizing wood utilization, each step is designed to improve the economic performance and sustainability of poplar cultivation.

Technology at the service of nature

GO BIOPOPTECH’s actions are testimony to an innovative approach. It deploys a series of actions that aim to transform the poplar sector, from the determination of optimal clones based on environmental, productive and health characteristics to the development of advanced ICT tools for the assignment of technological properties of wood that are implemented on mobile platforms and web applications to facilitate the selection of the ideal clone by owners.

At the same time, the project promotes the certification of sustainable forest management with the participation of PEFC Spain and the development of the compensation system “Thanks to the Poplar”, a French initiative implemented in Spain by the Spanish Association of Wood Trade and Industry (AEIM).

This project represents the union between technology, innovation and sustainability. Through the certification of sustainable forest management and the promotion of responsible plantations, it seeks economic benefit and environmental balance.

Cesefor promotes efficiency and collaborative innovation

Cesefor, as an outstanding technology center, brings to the GO BIOPOPTECH project its extensive experience and capabilities in forestry innovation, excelling in the application of advanced and sustainable technologies. Cesefor’s participation ensures synergy between cutting-edge research and practical application, boosting efficiency, sustainability and competitiveness of the timber sector, and setting a new standard in forest management and poplar wood harvesting.

GO BIOPOPTECH is a collaborative effort that integrates a wide range of key actors in the value chain, including the CESEFOR Foundation, which coordinates the project; Bosques y Ríos, a company specialized in poplar management and cultivar research and development; Garnica, a company specialized in poplar plywood manufacturing; Tabsal, specialized in LSL board manufacturing; Föra and Madera+, in the area of forest product innovation; AEFCON, (Spanish Association of Plywood Manufacturers) and the PEFC forest certification organization.

Other subcontractors include the University of Valladolid, the University of Santiago de Compostela, the University of Granada, FAFCYLE (Federation of Forestry Associations of Castilla y León), and collaborating entities such as the Regional Government of Castilla y León and the Government of Navarra.

Through joint research, the project has established 15 productive plots to study the main clones planted in our country, with the aim of establishing the productivity levels and technological properties of the wood of the different poplar cultivars in relation to the environmental conditions of cultivation.

Green commitment, promising future

GO BIOPOPTECH promotes sustainable practices and advanced technologies in poplar cultivation and is leading the way to a future where innovation and the environment go hand in hand.

With each action and result, GO BIOPOPTECH is demonstrating that it is possible to unite cutting-edge technology with care for our environment, showing the way towards a more sustainable and planet-friendly forestry industry.

This joint work promises to revolutionize the timber industry and contribute significantly to the fight against climate change, demonstrating that innovation and environmental commitment can create powerful synergies for a greener, more sustainable future.

GO BIOPOPTECH’s comprehensive approach aims at a future where the poplar sector in Spain is not only more competitive but also more sustainable and aligned with modern expectations of responsible production and consumption.

The GO BIOPOPTECH: Promotion of poplar cultivation and cascade use of its wood towards technological products with high added value, seeks the development of the value chain associated with the planting and use of poplar trees. The operational group GO-BIOPOPTECH has received a grant of 596,871.75 € for its innovation project. The amount of the project is 100% co-financed with funds from the European Recovery Instrument (EU Next Generation), as established in Royal Decree 169/2018, of March 23.
