LIFE DIVAQUA: Itagra participates in the conservation of aquatic ecosystems with innovation and sustainability

The LIFE DIVAQUA project, in which Itagra participates, is dedicated to the conservation of aquatic habitats and species in the ecosystems of the Picos de Europa National Park, promoting sustainability and biodiversity.

A commitment to nature: LIFE DIVAQUA by Itagra

The Agricultural and Agri-Food Technology Center, Itagra, is carrying out an innovative and crucial project for environmental conservation: LIFE DIVAQUA.

This project, funded by the European Commission’s LIFE program, seeks to improve the conservation status of habitats and species of community interest in the inland aquatic ecosystems of the Picos de Europa National Park, in northern Spain.

Through a series of strategic actions, LIFE DIVAQUA is committed to restoring, protecting and promoting the sustainability of these valuable ecosystems.

Protecting the Picos de Europa ecosystems

The DIVAQUA area covers watersheds draining the Picos de Europa National Park, an enclave of great natural value and biodiversity. The aquatic ecosystems of this region harbor habitats and species protected under the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). However, these ecosystems face significant challenges due to human pressure and environmental changes.

LIFE DIVAQUA focuses on mitigating these challenges by restoring and improving ecological and functional processes, such as ecological connectivity and the hydrological regime, thus ensuring the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Project objectives: restoration and sustainability

The LIFE DIVAQUA project has four main objectives:

1. Restoration of aquatic species and habitats: to improve the conservation status of aquatic species and habitats to achieve a favorable status.

2. Reduction of human pressure: minimize human impact on biodiversity, improving conservation and ecosystem services.

3. Promotion of sustainability: promote sustainable productive, educational, cultural, and tourism activities that respect aquatic ecosystems.

4. Development of new tools: create and apply new methodologies for the characterization, monitoring and management of species and habitats.

Innovation for conservation

LIFE DIVAQUA uses a variety of advanced technologies to meet its conservation objectives. Water quality analysis allows for a detailed assessment of aquatic habitats using advanced techniques. Remote sensing, through satellite imagery and drones, facilitates the inventory of water bodies and the characterization of the riparian environment.

In addition, environmental DNA analysis is used to detect the presence of species of community interest, pathogens and invasive species. Ecological restoration focuses on improving the connectivity of river ecosystems and the restoration of mountain lakes and ponds.

Finally, the project stands out for its local participation, implementing specific programs to involve the community and stakeholders in the conservation of aquatic habitats.

These technological innovations optimize the management and protection of aquatic ecosystems and encourage greater community participation in environmental conservation.

The importance of the project for a sustainable future

The LIFE DIVAQUA project seeks to protect and restore the aquatic ecosystems of the Picos de Europa National Park, but also promotes a sustainable development model.

By reducing human pressure and encouraging community participation, this project ensures that economic and recreational activities can coexist with biodiversity conservation.

The creation of new tools and approaches provides a solid framework for future conservation initiatives, both nationally and internationally.

Itagra

Itagra’ s commitment to the LIFE DIVAQUA project is a shining example of how technology and innovation can be used to address critical environmental issues. This project protects our natural heritage and promotes a closer relationship between humans and their environment, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
