These included ecological connectivity, the hydrological regime and sediment transport, key elements for the balance of these natural environments.

In this context, Itagra was part of the project consortium as one of the participating entities. Its presence in LIFE DIVAQUA was aligned with the center’s activity, oriented to the agricultural sector from agricultural, livestock, environmental, forestry and agri-food perspectives, as well as to research, development and applied innovation.

What is LIFE DIVAQUA

LIFE DIVAQUA is an environmental conservation project promoted to improve the state of aquatic ecosystems and associated biodiversity in a territory of high natural value. According to official information released by the University of Cantabria, the project was developed in the basins of the Sella and Deva-Cares rivers, within an area of some 245,000 hectares covering territories of Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla y León, and included several Special Areas of Conservation of the Natura 2000 Network.

Its approach was based on a clear idea: conserving aquatic biodiversity required action not only on species and habitats, but also on the factors that alter their functioning. LIFE DIVAQUA therefore combined ecological restoration, environmental monitoring and analysis tools to support more effective management of these ecosystems.

Objectives of the LIFE DIVAQUA project

The official project information included four main objectives. The first was to improve the conservation status of aquatic species and habitats. The second was to reduce human pressure on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The third was to promote productive, educational, cultural and tourism activities compatible with conservation. Fourth, to develop new methodologies for the characterization, monitoring, evaluation and management of species and habitats.

Within this framework, LIFE DIVAQUA developed lines of work related to habitat restoration, river connectivity and physicochemical analysis of water and environmental DNA, according to the project’s official website.

Itagra’s role in LIFE DIVAQUA

Itagra is one of the entities participating in LIFE DIVAQUA together with the University of Cantabria, CSIC, Red Cambera, the Environmental Hydraulics Institute Foundation of Cantabria, Repsol, Altano Energy and the regional administrations involved. The coordination of the project corresponded to the University of Cantabria, through IHCantabria.

From the institutional point of view, Itagra’s participation in a project of these characteristics is in line with its profile as a technology center. The entity presents itself as a center oriented to R&D&I and training, with activities in the agricultural, environmental, forestry and agri-food fields.

Innovation and sustainability to conserve aquatic ecosystems

One of the most relevant features of LIFE DIVAQUA was its technical approach. Official project information showed that the conservation of aquatic ecosystems was addressed through ecological restoration and environmental analysis and monitoring tools. Among the lines identified were physicochemical analysis of water, environmental DNA and actions linked to ecological connectivity.

This approach reinforced the value of the project from a sustainability perspective. Conservation was approached not only as environmental protection, but also as a combination of technical knowledge, restoration and management adapted to territories of high ecological value.

A project with an impact on biodiversity and territory

The University of Cantabria emphasized that LIFE DIVAQUA reconciled the conservation of aquatic ecosystems with human activities such as tourism, livestock and certain uses of the territory. This orientation placed the project in a sustainable management framework, especially relevant in areas of high natural value such as those linked to Picos de Europa.

In this context, Itagra’ s participation added value to a project that combined biodiversity, sustainability and applied innovation. From a communication point of view, this was the strongest axis of the article: presenting LIFE DIVAQUA as a European conservation initiative and Itagra as part of a consortium that worked on the improvement and protection of aquatic ecosystems.

LIFE DIVAQUA: Itagra’s contribution to the conservation of aquatic ecosystems in Picos de Europa.
