Air Intitute’s ChainWines project aimed to research, develop and implement a comprehensive blockchain platform for premium wines throughout their lifecycle.
Project background
Recording the entire traceability of the wine from the origin to the point of sale is one of the greatest complexities of the project because the product goes through many phases that begin before the grapes enter the winery. In fact, the traceability supported by the project goes from the climatic conditions of the grapes to the transport before reaching the customer, counting in between the processes of vinification, bottling, labeling.
Problems solved
Increasing the quality perceived by the consumer in wine through greater transparency in the processes has been a challenge, since the customer no longer only compares the products he buys by their origin or price, but also looks for some kind of additional differentiation such as the one provided by this project thanks to distributed registration technologies.
Investigate new traceability techniques that allow monitoring aspects that influence the variability of product quality parameters. Smart contracts make it possible to maintain established commitments between the different actors in the process. For example, between the winery and the transporter, who must maintain the product’s conservation standards until it reaches its destination.
Application challenge
There is increasing concern among customers and consumers about product quality, safety and potential risks due to potential allergens in a globalized food industry, as well as the environmental footprint of food product manufacturing. To meet this need, there are currently enabling technologies, such as Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain. ChainWines manages in a secure and intelligent way, all the information that the different actors (e.g., producers, transporters…) generate throughout the winemaking process, as well as its subsequent distribution, presenting a holistic solution within the wine industry.
Within the development of this success case AIR Institute has carried out the characterization of the operational and quality control procedures carried out in the winery, the design and implementation of a data ingestion layer for the characterization and traceability of all the processes of the wine value chain, the implementation of a security layer that certifies the integrity of the data, the research on distributed registration techniques to build an efficient database for traceability and the implementation of a solution for the management of all these data, the implementation of a security layer that certifies the integrity of the data, research into distributed registration techniques to build an efficient database for traceability and the implementation of the solution for managing all these innovations and providing adapted interfaces that allow Pago de Carraovejas to access all traceability information.
The main result obtained from this case study is a viable solution through the implementation of smart contracts based on distributed registry technology applied to the exchange of information between suppliers, distributors and end consumers.
