On International Biodiversity Day, the technology centers of Castilla y León are positioned as strategic allies in protecting the planet, leading projects that connect technology, innovation and sustainability.

Every May 22nd, the world pauses to reflect on the value of biodiversity. This date, promoted by the United Nations (UN), seeks to raise awareness of the importance of conserving the variety of life on Earth, which is key to ecological balance, human health and climate resilience. In this context, the work of technology centers acquires strategic relevance: they are drivers of innovative solutions that mitigate climate change, regenerate ecosystems and strengthen biodiversity.
In NODDO, we celebrate this day highlighting the commitment of the technology centers of Castilla y León with sustainable development and knowledge transfer. From carbon capture solutions to river restoration with environmental intelligence tools, the projects that Cesefor and ICAMCyL are committed to are living examples of the transformative power of R+D+i.
Technological projects that care for biodiversity
Cesefor: Restoring habitats, revitalizing life – LIFE Alnus Taejo Project
From the western basin of the Tagus, the LIFE Alnus Taejo project is working on the restoration of alluvial alder forests, vital ecosystems for the health of rivers and the balance of biodiversity. Through silvicultural actions, control of invasive species, bioengineering and natural regeneration techniques, the project seeks to restore more than 1,000 hectares of river habitats with native species.
One of the keys to this project is the use of MaxEnt software, an ecological modeling tool that predicts the distribution of species based on environmental variables. This innovation facilitates strategic decision-making to restore 432 hectares of riverbanks and connect ecological corridors, thus strengthening the region’s biodiversity network.

ICAMCyL: Nature and technology united against climate change – Project C-SINK
The European C-SINK project focuses on the implementation of large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies. In particular, it highlights the BCO2 tool, based on biological carbon fixation by living organisms, such as plants or microorganisms, which capture and convert CO₂ into organic matter. This natural solution not only helps combat climate change, but also regenerates soils, increases their fertility and water retention, and improves agricultural productivity in a sustainable way.
C-SINK ‘s innovation lies in its multidimensional approach: it prioritizes the responsible deployment of these technologies, ensuring that their climate benefits go hand in hand with the preservation of biodiversity. It also includes a robust environmental, social and governance assessment system that guarantees the integrity of the process and its long-term positive impact.

Driving innovation that transforms Castilla y León
From NODDO, we promote business competitiveness through the innovation of the nine technology centers of Castilla y León, generating a real impact in the strategic areas of the region. We face global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss, projecting sustainable solutions, through the region’s technology centers, which are born from shared knowledge.
We connect talent, innovation and technology to promote an efficient, ethical and collaborative R&D&I that places Castilla y León as a benchmark in sustainability and innovation. Today more than ever, we reaffirm our role as a driving force for change in the region, strengthening the technological capabilities of Castilla y León’s technology centers, and contributing to the development of a more resilient, connected and environmentally friendly society.
